More Than 100 Students Participate in Youth Legislative Day

Students from Foshay Learning Center, Crenshaw, Washington Prep, Middle College, and Hamilton High Schools were among the participants in a Youth Legislative Day hosted by the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL). The event was held in conjunction with their national conference at the Century Plaza Hotel from December 2-7.  The Youth Legislative Day was held on Wednesday, December 2 to expose students to the legislative process by conducting mock elections for legislative leaders, introducing, discussing, and passing legislation.
La Vonte Clark, a student from Foshay Learning Academy, conducted an impromptu campaign and speech and was elected by his peers to serve and lead the Youth Congress as the Speaker of the Senate. Roman Collins of Middle College was elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives. The NBCSL announced during the luncheon following the Youth Congress that both students were awarded a scholarship for their leadership.
