LAUSD High School Student Leaders Elect Representative to the Board of Education

Associated Student Body (ASB) Presidents from all High Schools in the District met to elect a Student Representative to serve as a Member of the LAUSD Board of Education. The final seven candidates represented each board district and were selected from a pool of 19 qualified applicants.
Leon Popa of Berenstein High School located in Board District 4 (above right with State Senator Holly Mitchell) was the student elected by his peers as the representative to the Board.  State Senator Mitchell delivered a keynote address outlining her days as a student leader in high school and college and encouraged the students to cultivate and nurture the relationships with their peers that will serve them well in the future.  She also shared that her postgraduate internship opportunities and networking with political leaders, such as then Senator Diane Watson, helped advance her career and facilitate her entrance into the public service arena.
